Jauja: Visitors light a barbecue near Paca lagoon and unleash a ravenous fire

Jauja: Visitors light a barbecue near Paca lagoon and unleash a ravenous fire

A large fire broke out on the afternoon of this first day of the year 2026, in the annex of Chucllú district of Pancán in Jauja.

The tongues of fire consumed considerable extensions of grasslands and cattails in the marginal strip of Laguna de Paca, causing the death of wild birds, nests and chicks.

Dozens of residents and community members made strenuous efforts, however the fire continued to discolor everything in its path.

Members of the Jauja Fire Company had difficulties due to inaccessibility in entering the shore.

According to César Atapoma Simeón, owner of the Ex Entur tourist resort, a family that had arrived to visit for the holiday caused the accident by leaving the charcoal they used to prepare a grill abandoned.
