Jauja population consumes water with arsenic due to inoperative treatment plant

Because the drinking water treatment plant does not work in the province of Jauja, the residents of the districts of Jauja, Sausa and Yauyos, in the Junín region, consume water with high levels of arsenic, which puts lives at risk. of 31 thousand people, increasing their vulnerability to diseases related to prolonged exposure to this toxic metal.

In the Specific Control Report No. 054-2024-2-0412-SCE of the Comptroller’s Office, it indicated that officials of the Provincial Municipality of Jauja and the responsible contractor failed to comply with the technical file authorizing payments for services not executed, consequently, they disappointed the project without verifying its functionality to remove arsenic from water.

The Comptroller’s Office estimated an economic loss of S/ 24,638 due to the payment of services not provided, without counting the incalculable costs derived from the impact on public health. The project, with an initial budget of S/ 8.6 million, never met the components of the treatment plant.

The Comptroller’s Office recommended adopting administrative and legal measures against the five responsible officials, as well as taking immediate actions to put the treatment plant into operation.
