Japan donates 5 million dollars in medical equipment to Cuba

Japan delivered this Tuesday a donation of medical equipment worth five million dollars to the Government of Cuba. Aid, that should have arrived in Februaryconsists of 13 mobile X-ray devices, 44 ultrasounds and a thousand vacuum cleaners, as well as spare parts, destined for 34 hospitals in the country, according to the official digital media Cubadebate.

The Cuban Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, affirmed that the donation will have a great impact on the country’s health services, which faces a great challenge due to the combination of the pandemic and US sanctions.

He also highlighted the “deep feelings of brotherhood” between both countries and their “solid bilateral relations”, and stressed that Japan has been one of the countries that has supported Cuba the most in the “difficult international context caused” by covid-19.

The Japanese ambassador to Cuba, Hirata Kenji, assured that the donation is one more example of Japanese solidarity

The Japanese ambassador to Cuba, Hirata Kenji, assured that the donation is one more example of Japanese solidarity and recalled that his country has other cooperation projects in Cuba, also in the health field.

The donation is part of the non-reimbursable financial aid of the Economic and Social Development Program of the Government of Japan for Cuba, signed in 2016.

Within this agreement, last October Tokyo sent 44 ultrasound stations to the Island for the diagnosis of various pathologies, manufactured by Fujifilm.

Japan’s cooperation with Cuba, in force for 60 years, intensified from the 1990s with coverage also for community projects for human security and cultural assistance.

Fruit of these pacts were also sent to the Island this January 84 buses valued at $9 million. The vehicles left Colombia, where they were assembled by the Busscar company thanks to an agreement with Itochu Corporation and Isuzu Motors and premiered in Februaryalmost a month after his arrival.
