The improvement in energy generation conditions, especially due to the rains that improved the levels of the hydroelectric plants’ reservoirs, guaranteed the maintenance of the green tariff flag for the month of January 2025. As a result, no additional amount will be charged on utility bills. light of Brazilians, reported the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).
“The tariff flag remained green from April 2022 until July 2024. The good news was repeated in December 2024 and will be maintained in January 2025 due to the continued favorable conditions for energy generation in the country”, explained Aneel.
According to the agency, reservoir levels increased with the arrival of the rainy season, which resulted in an increase in generation from hydroelectric plants. “This way, fewer projects with more expensive energy are activated, as is the case with thermoelectric plants,” he added in a note released this Friday (27).
Tariff flags
Created in 2015 by Aneel, the tariff flags reflect the variable costs of generating electricity. Divided into levels, the flags indicate how much it is costing the National Interconnected System (SIN) to generate the energy used in homes, commercial establishments and industries.
When the electricity bill is calculated using the green flag, there is no increase. When the red or yellow flags are applied, the bill is subject to increases of R$1,885 (yellow flag), R$4,463 (red flag level 1) and R$7,877 (red flag level 2) for every 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed. From September 2021 to April 15, 2022, a water scarcity flag of R$14.20 extra per 100 kWh was in force.
