In an event held this Wednesday (8) at Palácio do Planalto, 21 works restored after January 8 officially returned to the collection of the Presidency of the Republic – including a pendulum clock from the 18th century and a painting by the artist Di Cavalcante. “The preservation of this legacy that unites culture, history and democracy is everyone’s responsibility”, highlighted First Lady Janja da Silva, during the ceremony.
“Memory is one of the most important foundations of our identity as Brazilians. Its preservation is not just a tribute to the past, but also a commitment to the future”, he said. “The restoration of the palace’s works of art is part of this common effort with our democracy. They were unable to prevent freedom or destroy beauty. Against the violence and grayness of authoritarianism, we bring out the color of our culture and the joy of our people.”
The restoration of the pieces, according to Janja, included the collaboration of the Swiss government and the Swiss embassy in Brazil, the Ministry of Culture through the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) and the Federal University of Pelotas.
