Jalisco produces 80% of elite Limousin cattle genetics

Guadalajara, Jal. With 27 local producers, Jalisco is a national leader in the production of Limousin cattle genetics, which, due to its high quality, is exported to various countries in Central and South America, he commented to The Economistthe president of the Association of Limousin Brahmousin Cattle Breeders of Mexico, José Ángel Sánchez.

“At the national level, we have the leadership in genetic production; 80% of the elite genetics are in Jalisco. This genetics goes to all the states of the country, but it is also exported to Central and South America,” stressed the leader of the Limousin cattle producers.

He explained that in addition to Jalisco, other producing states are Zacatecas, Durango, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Sonora, Querétaro and Aguascalientes.

Interviewed within the framework of the Livestock Expo Jalisco 2024 which concludes this Sunday, the leader of the sector explained that due to the characteristics of this bovine breed of French origin, “the Limousin breed is the one that generates more business and profit for the producer and more satisfaction for the consumer.”

He added that this livestock has high muscle potential and little fat, which is why it is preferred by consumers because it is healthy meat, while for butchers it represents up to 15% more useful than other breeds.

More and more cattle of these characteristics are produced in Mexico; He arrived in the country approximately 30 years old; It is of French origin and the first cattle that was imported came from Canada. When we understood what it was about; We started making our own genetics from France, and we continue to do so.

Victoriano Sánchez, Limousin cattle breeder, shared that since 1998, his Santo Domingo Livestock in Ixtlahuacán del Río, Jalisco, has been dedicated to embryo transfer, artificial insemination and genetic improvement of the breed.

“The Limousin breed It is characterized by being an efficient cattle; “It is a breed that is widely used in crossbreeding to produce calves for supply, cattle for meat, and one of its main virtues is its performance because it is an animal with fine bones and a lot of meat,” he said.

For its part, the producer Salvador Ortiz Cevallossaid that currently, fatteners are betting on genetics to obtain higher yields, which is why he highlighted the importance of the contests and auctions held at Expo Ganadera.

“Right now they are very concerned about bringing in fine, European stallions, because they know that the better crosses they have, in the end, it gives them much better results in the development of the calf and at the time of sale for slaughter or for fattening, it gives them better income,” he said.

Salvador Valenzuela Becerra, delegate in Jalisco of the Limousin breed, highlighted that currently, “all ranchers with registered cattle are worrying about introducing animals with great genetic quality. That is why they are innovating with embryo transfer , in vitro fertilization, to be able to achieve this genetic improvement.

In that sense, he added, the Jalisco Livestock Expo has become the epicenter of business not only in live animals, but also in technology transfer and innovation in this sector.
