Jack Ma, the founder of Chinese tech giant Alibaba, was named Honorary Professor of Business Studies at a Hong Kong university, the institution announced Friday.
The appointment comes weeks after the billionaire made a rare public appearance in China after its fall from grace two years ago when the Chinese government decided to retake control of the technology industry.
Ma has kept a low profile since late 2020, when, following a speech criticizing Chinese regulators, Beijing suspended the listing of Alibaba subsidiary Ant Group.
Authorities subsequently imposed a record fine of 2.750 million dollars to Alibaba for alleged commercial practices disloyal
The Hong Kong University said on Friday that Ma had agreed to be an honorary professor at its business school.
The chair lasts for three years and ends in March 2026, according to local media, but Ma “has no plans to give lectures or public speeches”according to the South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong-based English-language newspaper owned by Alibaba.
