The president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC)doctor Jose Mars Piantinireceived this Wednesday the visit of representatives of the embassy of the United States from America on Dominican Republicheaded by Norva Hall, Business Officer of the Political and Economic Unitbeside Jonathan Brown from Customs and Border Protection of that country (Customs and Border Protection -CBP- in English).
Among the topics addressed, they touched on the status of the negotiations of the Air Services Agreement between both countries, after the last meeting held within the framework of the thirteenth Air Services Negotiation Event of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) -ICAN/2021, in Bogotá, Colombia, in December of last year. During the meeting, the president of the JAC maintained that “The Dominican Republic recognizes the importance that it represents for passenger traffic and trade between the two States, the conclusion of an agreement that updates the regulatory framework of its commercial air relations”.
The J.A.C. explained in a statement that the meeting aimed to give effect to the current bilateral framework and conclude with the signing of an agreement of the type Open skies.

One of the issues covered by the agreement refers to fare setting, allowing airlines to set their prices based on commercial market considerations. However, the intervention of Condition will be carried out to prevent unjustifiably discriminatory practices, as well as to protect passengers from excessively high or restrictive fares that originate from the abuse of a dominant position, explains the J.A.C..
Also, during the meeting, Mars Piantini and US diplomats addressed the issue of air operations between Russia and Dominican Republic, showing sustained growth since 2017.
After the pandemic Covid-19 and despite the fact that the operations to and from Russia restarted in July 2021, air traffic statistics exceeded 300 thousand passengers in arrivals and departures; similarly in the first two months of the year 2022, reaching 38% (174,630) of the passengers transported in the year 2017 (464,624 passengers), averaging a total of 444 passengers in each air operation.
Likewise, the JAC explained that all Russian airlines have gone from charter to regular flights, which demonstrates the interest of Russian tourists in the Dominican Republic. And they showed a simple projection of passengers that predicts that Russia would become in 2022 as the leading country of Europe in passengers transported to and from Dominican Republic, with about 785 thousand.
