The executive director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumer), Eddy Alcántara, reminded all companies that are dedicated to the bottling, marketing and distribution of water, as well as commerce in particular, that the deadline granted to protect this product from the sun’s rays expires this October 30.
Alcántara indicated that this measure seeks to comply with the agreement with the water bottling associations so that this mass consumption product does not continue to be exposed to the sun, because this causes damage to people’s health.
“We hope that by the 30th of this month all participants in the water bottling industry comply with the measures established by Pro Consumidor,” he added.
He announced that for the moment granting another period has not been contemplated, understanding that no compelling reasons have been found for this to happen, since originally the time that the entity defending consumer rights was going to establish for them to be protected the shelves was 30 or 45 days.
But we agreed – he continued saying – to what was requested by the water bottling associations themselves, who explained that it should be extended to three months to comply with those requirements, and we did so, so now they cannot ask for more time, because before nothing, there is the health of the people, of the consumers.
He noted, however, that through the Department of Good Business Practices the institution continues to carry out pre-surveillance and this has resulted in significant progress.
Alcántara stated that if the deadline expires and has not been met, he will begin massive operations in an attempt to remove and sanction businesses and companies that have not complied with what was agreed throughout the national territory, in compliance with the rules that govern this institution through Law 358-05.
Finally, he reiterated that among the measures that water distributors and merchants must comply with are finding a way to place the bottles inside the establishments for better management of consumers.
