The relatives of Américo de Grazia and Perkins Rocha thanked Senators Stefania Pucciarelli, president of the commission, and Cinzia Pellegrino “for having received us”
Relatives of former MP Américo de Grazia and lawyer Perkins Rocha asked the Italian Senate on Tuesday to intercede with the Venezuelan government for the release of both politicians.
Maria Rosa De Grazia, one of the daughters of the former deputy, intervened in a informal meeting of the Commission for the Protection of Human Rights of the Italian Senate, where he raised the situation in which the political leader has found himself since his arrest on August 8.
De Grazia was missing for a few days until his family informally learned that he was being held at the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) known as El Helicoide. His lawyers and family have filed complaints with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Ombudsman’s Office and the Public Defense without any response regarding his current state of health.
The daughter of the leader of Guayana Libre recalled that he has been a victim of political persecution in the past, which forced him to go into exile in Italy for a few years, after being linked to alleged mining mafias and a “conspiracy” to overthrow Nicolás Maduro, which led to the lifting of his parliamentary immunity. On August 18, the IACHR expanded precautionary measures in your favor.
Perkins Rocha’s nephews also raised the issue of the lawyer from Vente Venezuela, who was arbitrarily detained by hooded men on August 27.
At the time of his appearance in court, he was charged with five crimes, including treason and incitement to hatred, and was ordered to be held at the headquarters of the political police Sebin in El Helicoide, Caracas. The hearing took place in the early hours of August 29 without the presence of a private defender.
His relatives have denounced that the courts refuse to accept communications to appoint a private defender. The IACHR also granted him precautionary measures protection in early September.
The relatives also thanked Senators Stefania Pucciarelli, president of the commission, and Cinzia Pellegrino “for having received us.”
Maria Rosa De Grazia, my sister, had the opportunity to be the voice of our father in the Senate of the Italian Republic through its Human Rights Commission. We are infinitely grateful to its President.
