Nearly 39% of Olympic athletes underwent a doping test during the Paris Games, with five positive tests detected, the International Testing Agency (ITA), which is in charge of the anti-doping program during the Games, said on Thursday.
In total, 6,130 samples were obtained (urine, blood and dried blood) In 4,770 tests on 4,150 athletes, according to the ITA statement, which said that this was the “highest proportion” of athletes tested in the history of the Games.
The controls were carried out between the Olympic Village opening in mid-July and the closing ceremony of the Games on August 11.
The ITA did “about two thirds” of controls during the competition itself and the rest outside. Among the countries with the most controls are the United States, France, China, Australia and Great Britain.
Besides, The ITA carried out a testing programme several weeks before the Games, a period of high risk of doping, with nearly 90% of the approximately 10,000 participants in the Games subjected to tests at least once, he said.
In this period Forty violations were detected of the anti-doping rules.
At the Tokyo Games, held in 2021, six cases of doping were recorded.
Created in 2018 and partly funded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), The ITA plans, organizes and manages the results of anti-doping controls during the Games. He has also been in charge of the Tour de France and other high-profile events.
