As of January 2025, the minimum wage in Chili will undergo a new readjustment, which will raise it to an amount greater than $500,000. This increase is determined by the variation in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) accumulated between July and December 2024, a key indicator to measure the impact of inflation on the costs of living.
This increase is part of an agreement reached in 2023, which established a phased process to adjust the salary minimum. Since then, the base salary went from $410,000 to $500,000 in July 2024, and now, according to projections, an increase of between $11,000 and $12,000 is expected, depending on the behavior of the CPI, which would place it around $511,000.
The readjustment is especially significant for households with lower incomes, which face greater difficulties in a context of high inflation. According to the Unitary Central of Workers (CUT), this salary is still far from exceeding the poverty line, which for a household of four people is more than $620,000.
The CUT has expressed its concern about this scenario, highlighting the need for a minimum wage that allows workers and their families to achieve better living conditions. Despite the progress, the organization considers that the increase is still insufficient to cover basic needs.
With this objective in mind, the CUT is preparing a new proposal that will be presented to the Executive in April 2025. The initiative will seek to adjust the minimum wage more in line with the economic situation of the country, prioritizing overcoming poverty and well-being. of the working class.
