It should never have been truncated, says Lula about relationship with Trump

When commenting on the conversation he had with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Friday (10) that Brazil and the North American country established a relationship that should never have been truncated. It should never have been truncated, says Lula about relationship with Trump

“I started talking to Trump saying: I’m turning 80 years old and you’re going to turn 80 on June 14th next year. He’s eight months younger than me, so I’m old enough to talk more rudely to him”, joked Lula.

“I said to Trump: the two of us, at 80 years old, govern the two largest democracies in the West. We cannot spread discord, disagreement to the rest of the world. We need to convey harmony, we need to talk. Is there a disagreement? He has. Let’s put it on the table, sit down and talk’. There are no forbidden topics to talk to me about.”

During the launch ceremony of the new real estate credit model, in São Paulo, the president assessed that differences between the two countries must be treated with democracy and respect.

“I have never treated the president of another country ideologically. Those who have to treat him ideologically are the people who elected him, not me. I have to treat someone who was elected with respect and he has to treat someone who was elected with respect and that’s the end of the story”, he said. “I like to live with disagreements, dealing with them democratically”, he added.

“Brazil has no interest in fighting with the United States. I don’t want to fight with Bolivia, I don’t want to fight with Uruguay, why am I going to fight with the United States? If we win, what are we going to do? It’s better not to fight. It’s better to sit at a table, talk a little, sign some documents and everything will be fine.”

Lula also mentioned that Brazil should not depend “on one country or on the mood of a president from another country”. “This relationship is important because, in the world, no one respects those who don’t respect themselves. If you think that licking boots helps you, you’re going to fall off your horse. People respect you when they realize that you have moral authority, you have character”, he concluded.
