It looks like a corner of Morocco, but it is in the most colorful desert in Colombia

In Huila There is a place of reddish tones and rock formations that seem from another world, combining nature, history and science. Its arid climate, unique geography and paleontological richness make it an ideal destination for adventurers and scientists looking for unique experiences. Where is it and why is it compared to Morocco?

Declared World Geological Heritage during the 37th International Geological Congress, held last year in Busan, South Korea, The Tatacoa Desert is recognized as one of the most important and diverse biomes on the planet.

This place is the second largest arid area in Colombia, after La Guajira. With an area of 330 square kilometers, it is actually a tropical dry forest, characterized by its two main areas: El Cuzco, with reddish tones and labyrinthine formations, and Los Hoyos, with gray and white colors.

The Colombian Geological Survey highlights that the greatest importance of the region lies in its paleontological richness: more than 30,000 fossils have been found at the La Venta site dating back approximately 12 million years.

These remains, which include turtles, alligators and glyptodonts, have been key to understanding the evolution of fauna in South America during the Middle Miocene.

In addition to its scientific value, Tatacoa is a privileged place for astronomical observation. Thanks to the low light pollution, visitors can enjoy clear skies and contemplate the stars in all their splendor. ANDhe Tatacoa Astronomical Observatory has become one of the favorite destinations for astronomy fans.

How to get to the Tatacoa desert?

The Tatacoa Desert is located in Huila, very close to the departmental capital. For those who plan to visit it, it is essential to know the official access options, travel times and means of transportation available so that the journey becomes part of enjoyment rather than fatigue.

There are several ways to get there, depending on the city of origin and travel preferences (faster or cheaper). In all cases, the final stretch towards Villavieja is key, as it is the base to enter the different sectors of the desert.

In this framework, the specialized site Colombia Tours details the main routes, distances and means of transportation to reach one of the most surprising natural destinations in Colombia:

1. The desert is located 38 kilometers from Neiva, capital of Huilawhich translates into about 45 minutes by paved road to Villavieja, which is the starting point to the interior sectors of the desert.

2. Once in Villavieja, access to the desert formations —like El Cuzco or Los Hoyos— requires an additional trip of between 15 and 20 minutes by motorcycle taxi, jeep or vehicle suitable for rustic roads, depending on the exact point.

3. For those coming from distant cities, the air option to Neiva is viable. Many visitors fly from Bogotá or other regional capitals to the Benito Salas airport, and from there continue by road to Villavieja.

4. There are also direct land routes: From Bogotá, the road trip—by bus or private car—usually takes between six and seven hours, depending on traffic and stops.

The tourism authorities and official organizations of Huila, as well as specialized local platforms, recommend planning the trip in advance.verifying transportation schedules, road conditions and accommodation availability in Villavieja, and preparing what is necessary for the weather, given that temperatures can be very high during the day and drop significantly at night.
