Both the center-left and the opposition called for more will to deal with crime in the country. This, after the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, announced last week about the implementation of the national security plan, which includes, among other things, a reform of the Carabineros and the “total prohibition of possession of weapons “.
As a result of the rise in crimes and acts of violence, the Government decided on the idea of promoting a national anti-crime agenda. However, deputy Jorge Alessandri (UDI), a member of the Citizen Security Commission, maintained that “there has been an ambivalence in certain sectors, especially Approve Dignidad, in their voting in the previous period, which I hope will not be repeated in this”.
Along the same lines, Alessandri indicated that “we have the will to move forward” in voting on the initiative, whose purpose is to reduce crime levels. “A lot of independents from Congress as well, from the People’s Party, from the Christian Democrats, so hopefully we can move forward.”
“Until now that decision has not been seen, and as I say, there may be 10 laws that improve things, but if there is no transversal political support for the legitimate use of force, Carabineros and the Investigative Police have nothing to do ” , he complemented.
For his part, the deputy of the Socialist Party, Daniel Manouchehri, pointed out that “President Boric must give a frontal fight to the crime that Piñera left behind, an anti-crime agenda must be created with a focus on capturing and ensuring that the penalties are effective, the Police and prosecutors must fight so that these crimes do not go unpunished. It is time for a great national agreement against organized crime.”
“Government parties must understand this, especially those sectors that for ideological reasons reject anti-crime measures. It’s fine, we have to think about long-term social measures, but organized crime is acting today and the Chilean State must respond with force today, not tomorrow,” he added.
It should be noted that the Citizen Security Commission of the Chamber of Deputies will meet this coming Wednesday, June 15, where it will address projects that seek to extend the terms of detention for human trafficking, and the one that seeks to criminalize digital violence.
Meanwhile, the same instance, but from the Senate, will meet on Tuesday, and will discuss the projects that seek to punish the usurpation with effective jail. Also, it will address criminalizing the theft of wood, as well as regularizing the unified search process for disappeared persons. Also, it will refer to regulating security measures in care services and financial institutions.
