Santo Domingo. – The Catholic Church urged Good Friday to declare as national emergency intrafamily violence and femicides in the Dominican Republic, before the alarming increase in cases that seriously affect society.
During her speech in the traditional sermon of the seven words, held in the Primada Cathedral of America, Ms. Barbara Suárez, Franciscan and coordinator of the Children’s Pastoral of the Parish Our Lady of the Rosary of Villa Duarte, reflecting on the seventh word “Father, in your hands I entrust my spirit”, made an energetic called to take urgent measures to stop this national tragedy.
Catholics ask unity to stop femicides in the country
«Today domestic violence and feminicides shamefully shake the country. Only in the first quarter of the year, 17 women have been killed, hundreds of complaints have been filed before the Public Ministry, and many families have been destroyed. Children and adolescents grow without their mothers, and in many cases, also without their parents, ”Suárez said with deep concern.

The religious stressed that this problem must be approached structurally, since it responds to a complex reality where factors such as the inability to handle conflicts, the lack of emotional control and the normalization of violence in society affect.
«This is not a problem of a few. It is a challenge of the whole society: of the State, of public institutions, of the judicial system, of the education system, civil society, families, churches and media. We must all unite in concrete, coordinated and sustained programs to eradicate this violence that threatens coexistence and human dignity, ”he emphasized.
Finally, Suarez insisted that the country cannot limit themselves to regretting deaths, but must act with decision to protect the life and integrity of Dominican families.
