“Failure is an act of revenge”
After learning of the guilty verdict, the opponent and political exile Javier Álvarez acknowledged which was already expected. “I did not expect anything good from this government, they – the Ortega dictatorship – are not able to have empathy for people, they cannot accept that there are people in Nicaragua who think differently from what they think,” he lamented.
The opponent added in statements to Article 66 that the action against his wife, daughter and son-in-law is an act of revenge against him for not being able to kidnap him and avoid silencing him. “I feel enormous pain, my soul hurts, every cell hurts,” he said.
Despite the new onslaught of the dictatorship, the persecuted politician stated with aplomb that “I am not going to redeem myself, I am not going to kneel; I am going to continue with my ideas because they are mine and no one can take them away from me».

The three relatives of Álvarez are being held in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, in Managua, where there are more than 50 prisoners of conscience.
These citizens were detained by the Police on September 13, 2022, one day before the national festivities. Officials were looking for Javier Álvarez and when they could not find him, because he had gone into exile in search of international protection, they decided to imprison his relatives.
Last October, the opponent then denounced that police officers broke into his home arbitrarily and without a warrant. One of Javier Álvarez’s concerns is the health condition of both his wife and daughter, who have not been treated by a specialist.
