The Israeli Air Force (IAF) confirmed that more than 500 targets were hit this Saturday (28) in Iran, during a military campaign launched by Israel and the United States.
According to a publication by the Israeli force on social media, around 200 military jets participated in the offensive against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ missile arsenal and air defense systems in western and central Iran.
Israel classified the offensive as the “largest military overflight in history” by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
“More than 500 targets were hit, including air defense systems and missile launchers in several locations in Iran simultaneously,” details the publication.
Dead and injured
The attacks carried out by the United States and Israel left at least 201 people dead and 747 injured.
The information is attributed to a spokesperson for the Red Crescent Society, a civil humanitarian organization, and was reported by news agencies, such as the Arabic Al Jazeera.
According to the Red Crescent, 24 of Iran’s 31 provinces were targeted. Provinces are administrative territorial organizations, equivalent to states, here in Brazil.
Girls’ school
According to the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), one of the attacks was on a girls’ school in the city of Minab, in the province of Hormuzgan, in the south of the country, leaving at least 85 students dead.
In another offensive, 18 civilians were killed in a residential area in the city of Lamerd, Fars province, also in southern Iran.
The provincial governor, Ali Alizadeh, said the attacks hit a sports complex, a hall next to a school and two other residential locations. He said he believed the number of deaths would increase as there were injuries.
Offensive and reactions
The attack by the United States and Israel took place two days after a round of negotiations between the Americans and the Iranians regarding the limits of Iran’s nuclear program. The country claims that nuclear technology is for peaceful purposes. However, the United States and some allies, especially Israel, do not accept Iranian development.
Several countries, including Brazil, condemned this Saturday’s offensive. The UN called for a ceasefire in the region.
When justifying the attacks, United States President Donald Trump said defend Americans.
In retaliation, Iran attacked neighboring countries that host American military bases. According to Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hamid Ghanbari, the country has the right to defend himself.
