Israel closes its borders to foreigners due to new omicron variant

After three hours of debate, the emergency cabinet for Covid-19 last night adopted several actions in this regard, which included meeting restrictions and the extension of the quarantine for Israelis arriving from another country.

Only foreigners can enter with a special permit issued by a government panel.

The Executive also gave the green light to intelligence agencies to follow up on infected people, a measure used in the past and that received numerous criticisms.

Under the new rules, Israelis vaccinated upon arrival from abroad will be isolated for 72 hours and then subjected to a PCR test, while those who did not inject against the disease will have to be confined for a week.

The authorities also labeled 50 countries in red, all in Africa, to which nationals will not be able to travel unless they receive a permit.

National television stations revealed that Justice Ministers Gideon Sa’ar and Education Ministers Yifat Shasha Biton rejected the new restrictions.

The Health Ministry yesterday confirmed a case of the new omicron variant (from a traveler from Malawi) and reported seven other suspects.
