Is the fee for foreigners in Colombian museums discriminatory?

Is the fee for foreigners in Colombian museums discriminatory?

A debate in social networks was opened about the differential rates charged to foreigners in some museums in the country. French journalist Guylaine Roujol described this measure as discriminatory.

(Read: Piqué’s new response to Shakira: he reached the Kings League in Twingo).

“QI wanted to go to the National Museum. It turns out that I did not enter because I was discriminated against for the sole fact of being French“, says Roujol on Twitter. And he explains that discrimination begins with the law in Colombia and, specifically, from the Petro government.

The journalist explains that before the entrance was free on Sundays. Nevertheless, this has only applied for the last Sunday of each month and now also on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 pm, in accordance with Resolution 2683 of December 27, 2022, a measure that came into effect on January 10, 2023.

Roujol also states that the fee is still free for students from public universities. Therefore, he presented his card from the Sorbonne University in Paris. “But, because I’m French, they wanted to charge me in dollars“, he assures.

(In addition: This would cost him to have a career, house, visa and car at 23 years old).

The rate for foreigners is 10 dollars, which in pesos would be around 48,000 pesos. While the Colombians pay 6,000 pesos.

The measure is not new either. Through resolution 070 of March 27, 2017, several museums established differential rates for foreigners.

Are museums in the world free for foreigners?

The journalist also states that there are no differentiated rates for French and foreigners in any museum in France. “There is a reduction for the elderly, for children, for the unemployed or students, but not for their nationality or skin color. The opposite would be pure outrage“, Explain.

(See: Increase in wages and inflation, the challenges of tourism in 2023).

The statement is not entirely true. The Louvre Museum, for example, one of the most famous in the world for having works like La Monalisa and which is located in Paris, has free admission for residents of the European Economic Area. On the contrary the internet fee is 17 euros and in the museum it is 15 euros. That is, 86,426 Colombian pesos.

Even in other Latin American countries and in other types of tourist and cultural places, differential rates apply. This is the case of the entrance to Machu Picchu, in Peru, it has a value of 60 dollars for foreign adults and 31 dollars for nationals of Peru, Colombia, Boliviar and Ecuador.

In the case of Chichén Itzá, in Mexico, the price for Mexican citizens is 253 Mexican pesos and for adults it is 571 Mexican pesos.
