A request to verify whether or not the alert about a supposed wave of home robberies was true arrived on our WhatsApp. According to the viral message, the thieves pretend to be employees of the Ministry of the Interior to break into the victims’ homes and steal their belongings:
The viral information is not true and its origin is not Venezuelan, but Colombian.
In response to the chain of events in that country, in June 2024, the Colombian government clarified that officials from the Ministry of the Interior are not authorized to request personal information, fingerprints or photos, nor to enter homes. In addition, it indicated that no activity was being carried out on the ground, in cities or municipalities, that involves employees of the entity going door to door and requesting information from families and individuals.

When the 1999 Constitution came into force, our former Ministry of the Interior was merged with the Ministry of Justice. In 2007, it was renamed the Ministry of People’s Power for Internal Relations and Justice. In 2013, President Nicolás Maduro renamed it with the name by which it is currently known: Ministry of the Interior, Justice and Peace.
