The National Environmental Licensing Authority (ANLA) officially announced the appointment of Irene Vélez as the new director of the entity.

As explained by the ANLA, the former mining and energy minister comes to office to give a boost to renewable energy projectswhere you will have to overcome the goal of energy generation established by the National Government.
“Irene Vélez Torres assumes the direction of the ANLA, with the commitment to continue strengthening the entity’s capabilities to guarantee an environmental management that enables the fair energy transition, protecting ecosystems and respecting communities,” He highlighted the state entity.

Profile of the new director
Vélez led the energy portfolio between 2022 and 2023 in the current administration of President Gustavo Petro. Subsequently, he served as a consul of Colombia for the United Kingdom, a work carried out between 2024 and 2025.
The new director of the ANLA, in addition, is a doctor in Geography at the University of Copenhagen (with Francisco José de Caldas scholarship), Fullbright Scholar and categorized as a senior researcher by the Ministry of Sciences.
In addition, He performed two postdoctoral stays at the University of Coimbra and Clemson University, where he investigated about socio -political crises and the use of nanotechnologies for the detection of highly dangerous pollutants.
After her appointment, the new director of the ANLA appointed Diana Marcela Hurtado Chaves as the new Deputy Director of Environmental Licenses Evaluation; Tomás Restrepo Rodríguez already as deputy director of instruments, permits and environmental procedures.
