Emigrantes venezolanos desbloquean frontera de Ecuador y Colombia

IRC assures that the Venezuelan migration crisis needs more funding

The organization pointed out that clashes between national forces and Colombian criminal groups, as well as between armed groups, increased in 2021, which may continue to displace Venezuelans this year.

The migration crisis in Venezuela requires greater financing, support and protection for citizens who leave the country in search of security and stability in other Latin American nations, the International Rescue Committee said Thursday (IRC).

In the presentation of the “Report on the crisis in Venezuela: Harmonization of a response based on the population”, the regional vice president of the IRC, Meghan López, maintained that in the next three years the priority is “the immediate response, which is based on greater support and financing” for the needs of Venezuelans.

“Secondly, more security throughout the region, looking at how we can generate protection for people who are looking for security,” López added.

He recalled that Latin American countries such as Colombia, Ecuador and Peru “have assumed the response to the needs of Venezuelans despite insufficient support from the international community.” In 2021, only 40% of what was required by the Venezuelan Humanitarian Response Plan was financed.

“Mexico is a country that is also seeing an increasing number of Venezuelans arriving. 2021 was an unprecedented year for the number of asylum applications, with more than 131,000 Venezuelans. It was the fifth nationality to apply for asylum », he stated.

For his part, the deputy director of IRC operations in Colombia and Venezuela, Mauricio Rodríguez, assured that before the response is expanded, “an evaluation must be carried out to understand the needs and the gaps that exist.”

“Venezuelans need basic services, and communities (need) to have them delivered throughout the region and the international community. They need to scale up their funding to be able to meet those needs because if not, we’re leaving a huge number of people behind,” he said.

Last January, the IRC warned that if the current crises in Haiti, Honduras and Venezuela are not resolved, they could end up generating a regional impact throughout 2022.

The organization pointed out that clashes between national forces and Colombian criminal groups, as well as between armed groups, increased in 2021, which may continue to displace Venezuelans this year.
