The Iranian Ministry of Education raised to 153 the number of girls killed in Saturday’s attack (28) on a school in Minab, in the south of the country, in addition to 95 injured. Tehran blames the United States (US) and Israel for the “inhumane Zionist attack”, Ali Farhadi, spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Education, told the IRNA news agency.
This Sunday (1st), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) released a statement strongly condemning the attack that hit a girls’ primary school, amid the military escalation in the Middle East. The entity claims to be “deeply alarmed” by the impact of the clashes on educational institutions, students and education professionals.
“The death of students in a space dedicated to learning constitutes a serious violation of the protection afforded to schools by international humanitarian law”, highlights UNESCO in the note.
The organization also warns that attacks against educational institutions “put students and teachers at risk and compromise the right to education”.
The demonstration explicitly cites the United Nations Security Council and Resolution 2601 (2021), which condemns attacks on schools in situations of armed conflict and reinforces the obligation of the parties involved to protect educational environments.
