This Tuesday, December 24, Iran lifted the block on the WhatsApp messaging application, which has been subject to restrictions for more than two years, which represents a first step in eliminating internet restrictions, state media reported.
The official IRNA agency noted that the ban on WhatsApp and Google Play was eliminated by unanimous vote of the members of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace.
Both WhatsApp and the digital distribution platform for mobile applications Google Play were blocked during the protests that broke out in Iran in September 2022, after the death of the young Mahsa Amini in police custody, after being arrested for not wearing the Islamic veil properly.

This decision generates controversy in Iran, as opponents of the restrictions claim that the controls were costly for the country. “The restrictions only brought anger and additional costs to people’s lives,” a presidential advisor, Ali Rabiei, declared in X.
However, others warn against lifting restrictions.
The reformist daily Shargh reported Tuesday that 136 deputies of the 290-member parliament sent a letter to the council telling it that this measure would be a “gift to the enemies” of Iran.
