The Government of Nicaragua received this Tuesday 200,000 doses of vaccines against covid-19 from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“Thank God we got vaccines from the Islamic Republic of Iran this afternoon. Deeply grateful. Coviran vaccines for 200,000 people to continue vaccinating. Continue protecting ourselves,” Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo said through government media.

With these vaccines, the Nicaraguan authorities hope to increase the population vaccinated against covid-19, which until this morning constituted “almost 93%” with a single dose and 85% with the full schedule, among those over two years old, as detailed also the wife of President Daniel Ortega.

So far, Nicaragua has reported the death of 242 people, as well as 19,049 infections from covid-19, since the first patient was detected in the country, in March 2020.

Nicaragua has been an ally of Iran since the Sandinista leader returned to the presidency in 2007.

Relations between Nicaragua and the Islamic country sparked controversy on January 10, when Iran sent Mohsen Rezai, one of those accused by the Argentine Justice for the 1994 attack against the Jewish Mutual AMIA of Buenos Aires.

In said meeting, the Iranian representative reminded Ortega of the closeness of their governments, as well as the willingness to “collaborate and cooperate so that we can defeat US imperialism.”

Nicaragua has also acquired vaccines made by Cuba and Russia, as well as donations from China, the United States, European countries, among others.
