Iran’s official media reported on Friday the suspension of flights and the activation of air defenses in several cities after registering three explosions near a military base which could be an attack by Israel.

The event occurs in the midst of an escalation of tension between the Islamic Republic and Israel, which had promised to respond to Tehran attack with hundreds of missiles and drones launched against its territory.

The American television network ABC, citing a senior official of the North American country, said that the Jewish state had launched an attack against Iranian territory.

Questioned about this, the Israeli army said that I was not going to make “any comment at the moment” about the explosions in Iran.

An activist from the local Syrian media outlet Suwayda 24, Rayan Maarouf, also reported attacks on a Syrian army radar position in the south of the countrybut did not specify the origin of these actions.

In Iran, the local Fars news agency reported “three explosions” near the Shekari military basenear the city of Isfahan, in the center of the country.

The Islamic Republic has nuclear facilities in the province of Isfahan which, according to the Tasnim agency citing “reliable sources”, are “completely safe.”

As a result of this event, authorities activated air defenses in several provinces early Friday, the official Irna press agency said.

The spokesman for Iran’s space agency reported that several drones were “successfully shot down” by air defense and noted that there were no signs of “a missile attack for now.”

“At this time there is no airstrike beyond Isfahan and other parts of the country,” Hossein Dalirian said in a message on the X social network.

Citing airport authorities, the Mehr news agency announced the suspension of commercial flights with origin and destination to several cities in the country, including Tehran.

In Israel, the army announced the activation of warning sirens for an air attack in the north of the country, on the border with Lebanon.

These events occur at a time of maximum tension in the Middle Eastwith fears of a regional expansion of the war between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Last Saturday, Iran carried out its first direct attack against Israel, launching some 350 drones and missiles that Jewish forces intercepted almost entirely.

The Tehran authorities assured to act in “legitimate defense” after the deadly bombing of its consulate in Damascus on April 1, which Iran blames on Israel.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres denounced on Thursday the “dangerous escalation” in the region and warned that “the Middle East is on the edge of a precipice.”

“We are on the brink of a war in the Middle East that will shake the rest of the world,” agreed with concern the head of diplomacy of the European Union, Josep Borrell.
