IPYS: 20 digital media outlets were blocked during May

IPYS demands that public authorities put an end to this practice of censorship and deterioration of press freedom, in favor of the Venezuelan population that deserves access to information

The Press and Society Institute (IPYS) of Venezuela published its monthly report on violations of freedom of expression, the results of which again yielded evidence of censorship against digital media.

According to IPYS, blockades of information portals were a constant during the month of May. At least 20 digital media outlets suffered some kind of blockage throughout the month.

The IPYS monitoring team made 1,440 measurements between Monday May 23 and Friday May 27. In just those five days, various blocking mechanisms were registered in several internet operators that ended up affecting 20 information portals.

“These restrictive actions harmed 21 domains from 20 media outlets through DNS (345) and HTTP (134) blocks,” the institute explains.

Among the national portals that suffered the most blockages were Armando.info, Cocuyo Effect, La Patilla, AlbertoNews, Caraota Digital, Noticia al Día and Monitoreamos, with difficulties accessing on 31 occasions with the three main operators in the country: Digitel, Movistar and CanTV.

El Pitazo, Crónica Uno and El Nacional followed on the list. In these three media, access difficulties were detected on 21 occasions with various mechanisms. Finally, Aporrea and Runrunes completed the list with 10 restrictions.

But the list does not stop there, since the international media are also harmed. The report indicates that NTN24 was victimized 31 times during the measurement, while Vivo Play racked up 30 bans. Following on the list were VPItv (21), Infobae (21), EVTV (20), El Tiempo de Colombia (20), and the organizations Mi Convive (21) and Acceso a la Justicia (9).

IPYS demands that public authorities put an end to this practice of censorship and deterioration of press freedom, in favor of the Venezuelan population that deserves access to information.

But it is that even the problems with public services hinder press freedom, since connectivity in Venezuela is poor and tends to have constant interruptions. The report also measured these failures and found that in at least 35 cases telecommunications in the country were affected.

“According to the registry, 21 of the events were caused by unknown incidents, while seven were the product of blackouts or power cuts and another seven, due to fiber optic cuts,” they explain.
