Ipsos survey: crime and violence are the main concerns of Chileans

The report “What worries the world” (“What Worries The World“), from the international consultancy Ipsos, revealed that the main concern of Chileans is crime and violence by 48%, assuring 56% of them that things in the country “are going in the wrong direction”. The measurement carried out to more than 19,000 people in 27 countries, revealed that the number one concern worldwide is the proliferation of the Omicron variant, by 35%, but in the case of Chile, the coronavirus is ranked sixth in your concerns.

The director of Public Studies at Ipsos Chile, Pablo Alvarado, explained that “crime has historically positioned itself as a topic of great concern among Chileans, so its consolidation in the first place is not a new phenomenon in the perception indicators The big difference on this occasion is that it emerges strongly after a period where there was a feeling of greater tranquility and security, explained in large part by the social distancing measures implemented during the years 2020 and 2021 (mainly quarantines ). To this is added the appearance of violent crimes of great public connotation.”

Since May of last year, crime and violence have remained in first place, pointed out by 48% of those surveyed, ranking well above the world average, in which their concern reached 26%, ranking fourth. among the 27 countries measured.

The first concern in Chile is followed by poverty and social inequality, at 38%, positioning itself above the world average, which had 31% and fifth place in the ranking. Political and financial corruption is in third place at the national level, with 26% of mentions, although it is the Latin American country that shows the lowest percentage of concern in this area.

In fourth place on the list of concerns is inflation, at 23%, being its highest position since this study was carried out, and reaching third place in Latin America. In addition, in fifth and sixth place, there is the control of immigration and the Covid-19 pandemic, both with 22%, respectively; Chile is the third country in the global ranking least concerned about the coronavirus.

“With the social outbreak, concern about inequality and corruption increased sharply. However, from October 2019 to the present, both concerns have shown a downward trend, while new issues such as immigration control and inflation have earned in the public interest. In the case of immigration, the level of concern of Chileans is comparable to that of the countries of the European community,” Alvarado said.
