Neither citizen insecurity nor corruption have managed to amylast Peruvians who, despite everything, and as historian Jorge Basadre pointed out at the time, are convinced that Peru is bigger than their problems.
This is revealed by the last survey conducted by Ipsos for Peru21 within the framework of the festivities for the national anniversary. There, 67%of respondents said that Peru is larger than its problems and believes that at some point things will improve, a position that is higher in Lima (73%) than in the interior of the country (64%). Only 30% of the total interviewees considered that the difficulties are so many that they can find a solution for them.
The study, conducted at the national level, also took the temperature to our feelings with respect to Peru at a juncture in which corruption cases, assaults, extortion, violence against women abound. A scenario that has possibly influenced that only 36% of respondents generate hope for the country, a figure that five years ago reached 46%.
Despite this, there are other feelings that grow and for good, and it reflects that 34% who said they were proud of Peru and that 26% who expressed their love for him.
The reasons? 48% identify Peruvian cuisine as the main reason for pride, followed by culture and art with 44% and natural resources (40%). In the list they also mention history (37%) and Machu Picchu (35%), the Inca citadel declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
But just as there are lights there are also shadows, and unfortunately, for many there are also reasons to feel shame of being Peruvian.
The Ipsos survey clearly requires it. 60% places crime in the first place in the list of reasons for that, and almost at the same time, with 59%, to corruption. Politicians are not excluded; 44% of citizens identify them as the third cause.
Finally, the study – metal on July 3 and 4 in urban and rural areas – realizes that 72% of the population considers that the symbol that best represents is the flag followed with 45% by the national shield and Machu Picchu. A short distance is the ceviche with 32%.
