“With pride we demand our rights because all people must be equal, without discrimination. In addition to being LGBTI+, we are people with disabilities, workers, women, peasants, indigenous people, Afro-descendants, HIV-positive. We feel the Pride of existing to transform Paraguay with more rights and equality, ”said Paloma Vera, executive director of the SOMOSGAY organization, in part of her speech.

Maríe García, from Panambí, addressed those present from the stage. “We demand from the Paraguayan State that we be recognized as people”, who highlighted the demand for recognition of gender identity, as well as the need for comprehensive policies, more than just inclusion, so that trans people can have a dignified life.

“This concurrence is a demonstration that we do not forget to occupy the streets. We go out to occupy a space that has always been denied us. Today we can claim memory, erase the dictator and exorcise everything that the dictatorship left in people’s heads. Today they saw us alive, happy, proud. The street is ours…”, said Simón Cazal, representative of the regional Gay Latino organization.

The Mexican ambassador to Paraguay, Juan Manuel Luz Garay, also addressed those present. “It is an honor to be here with you. I bring you the encouragement and greetings of Mexico. Thank you for this act”, said the Mexican diplomat, whose words were celebrated with a round of applause. The US Ambassador, Marc Ostfield, who is in Paraguay with her husband, Michael, also attended the stop.

On the other hand, Federico Enciso, PLRA youth pre-candidate for deputy for Asunción, gave a strong speech. “With this act, we are walking towards the dignity and equality of Paraguayan society. We are resolutely going towards freedom and a better Paraguay…”, he said, while criticizing the current government of Mario Abdo Benítez, because “it destroys Paraguayan families and takes away dignity from the Paraguayan people with its policies”. Enciso also claimed to proudly celebrate his sexual orientation as a gay man.

Historic activists such as Usha, Petunia, Liz Paola, Carla and others who make up Paraguayan LGBTIQ+ memory were remembered with applause. On the occasion, HIV and STI tests were also offered, as well as vaccination against COVID and influenza.

Organized by Panambí, SOMOSGAY and GayLatino, the event marked a milestone as the most massive parade in the country, after 3 years of pause due to the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The festival culminated in a street party, with people celebrating their pride in being part of the LGBTIQ+ community.

“Ñande Rekorã is our different response to the multiple crises that we are experiencing in Paraguay, in social, environmental, economic and health matters, and it can be summed up in: the same rights for all people and for all families,” concluded Paloma Vera.
