IP China asks Mexico to reconsider tariffs

The Mexico-China Chamber of Commerce and Technology (Mexico Chamber China) sued the Mexican government and Congress “reconsider and temper” the eventual application of 50% of the tariff to various Chinese products, since it argued that being “discriminatory” measures could distort the domestic market, such as inflationary increases and impact on competitiveness.

“We propose a gradual and equitable approach, which puts the effects on inflation, the creation of quality jobs and the development and deepening of value chains with a greater degree of binational integration,” said the private agency formed by Chinese companies with operations in Mexico and Mexican companies with operations in China.

The Mexico-China Chamber of Commerce and Technology called for the certainty and consolidation of Mexico in the value creation chains, so it raised its hand to be part of the dialogue with the Government of Claudia Sheinbaum to review the tariffs of the 2026 economic package, to be taxes on the importation of Chinese products.

“We endorse the principles of equity and reciprocity in bilateral trade between Mexico and China, being so we ask and the effects of any measure of economic and commercial policy are revoked, which distorts the market or violate competitiveness, since tariffs should not be discriminatory,” he said.

The pronouncement of the Mexico Chamber China occurred a few hours after the Chinese government declared that “it firmly opposes any coercion”, after Mexico scheduled to impose tariffs of up to 50% on imports of cars and other Chinese products.

“(China) firmly opposes any coercion of others to impose restrictions on China under different pretexts, which undermines China’s legitimate rights and interests,” said a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, in a daily press conference.

Jian insisted that his country “has always advocated inclusive and beneficial economic globalization.”

“We hope Mexico will accompany us in the way of promoting world economic recovery and the development of global trade,” added the spokesman. He also said that China “opposes every way of unilateralism, protectionism and discriminatory and exclusive measures.”

We do not want conflict: Sheinbaum

For his part, in her morning conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum said that it is not Mexico’s desire to initiate a conflict with the Asian country, so she will seek dialogue.

“We are talking with the ambassadors here in Mexico, we do not want any conflict with any country. So, we are talking to them, with the Chinese ambassador to Mexico, which recently had the opportunity – for the way – to receive their credential letters with South Korea.

“We are explaining that it is a measure that has to do with the strengthening of our economy and the Mexico Plan, but what we want is to speak, and talk, and without the need to generate some conflict. We are in the best willingness to speak with all countries and is within the framework of the World Trade Organization; that is, the rules are established in the WTO, to which Mexico belongs, until how much a tax for importation of products can be increased,” said the president Sheinbaum.

In the same position, the Foreign Secretary, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, ruled out the breakdown of diplomatic relations with China and assured that there is a lot of communication with the authorities of that country, including the ambassador to Mexico, Chen Daojiang, as well as with ambassadors from other countries to directly inform them of the scope of the Mexico Plan and the new opportunities that open.

“It is a very cordial relationship, it is a friendly relationship, where these issues are raised, elaborated, talk. The relationship remains productive and cordial,” he told a press conference. (With information from Perla Pineda).
