CDMX, Mexico.-The first hotel facility properly “pet friendly” in Cuba will open at the Villa Tortuga hotel, in Varadero. The information was confirmed to Travel Trade Caribbean by Diana Beatriz Olivera Rodríguez, Commercial Vice President of the Gran Caribe Hotel Group.
The news was announced during the 43rd edition of the International Tourism Fair, FITUR 2023, in Madrid. Cuban spokesmen presented it as an ideal destination for those travelers who wish to bring their pets.
As its name indicates, “pet friendly” refers to being kind to pets. When a facility is presented in such a category, this not only means that it accepts animals, but also offers certain benefits for them. For example, it is common for the hotel to invest in materials and utensils to deposit your pet’s waste; as well as bowls of water and food. Give them leashes and toys, as well as include beds for them in the rooms.
In the same way, these facilities are expected to have an exclusive area for animals and personnel dedicated to providing them with food or doing recreational activities for them. Having a veterinarian is a highly valued plus in this type of accommodation.

As published by the referenced media, also at FITUR 2023, Gran Caribe and SEGITTUR Spain officially signed an agreement to transform Cayo Largo del Sur into the first Smart Tourist Destination in Cuba and the Caribbean. What in practice would be to incorporate technological innovation to this destination located in the Caribbean Sea, 135 km from Nueva Gerona.
Cayo Largo has an area of 37.5 km and 25 km in length, almost entirely of beach, and is a luxurious destination. At the end of last November Blue Diamond Resorts announcedeither remodeling in four of its hotels in this pole tourist.
On the other hand, the vice president and CEO of the Spanish company Meliá, Gabriel Escarrerduring a presentation on the first day of the Fair in Cuba, Escarrer specified that the Meliá Trinidad Peninsula —in the center of the country— will be the last of the hotels that Meliá will open this year, and stressed that “it will probably be the best in the island in the Premium offer”.
The Cuban government has the goal of receiving 3.5 million international tourists this year. In 2022 they barely received 1.6 million, a figure well below the forecast of 2.5 million visitors. Since the start of the pandemic The tourism it plummeted, and has yet to recover.
While luxurious hotels continue to be built on the island, the housing stock is increasingly precarious. Cuban cities lose houses and buildings due to lack of maintenance and families, who could never afford those hotels, lose their homes.
