“This is the largest investment in the history of the port of Montevideo, which will generate a very positive change for the development of port activity,” announced the president of the National Ports Administration (ANP), Juan Curbelo, after meeting with the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado.
The meeting, in which the Ministers of Transport, José Luis Falero, and Environment, Adrián Peña, and representatives of the company Katoen Natie also participated, was held on Tuesday 18 at the Executive Tower.
After the meeting, Curbelo explained in a press conference that during the meeting the authorities defined actions to start the expansion works of the specialized container terminal in March 2023.
“This is the largest investment in the history of the port of Montevideo, exceeding 550 million dollars, which will generate a very positive change for the development of port activity,” he considered.
He added that during the meetings environmental and technical criteria will be established to accelerate the process and meet the objectives set. “The Government made available all the technical services to work jointly with the Katoen Natie company,” he asserted.
In addition, it is expected that the impact on the infrastructure of the Sarandí breakwater will be minimal and that it will improve for public use. The company presented the executive project, which is analyzed by the Ministry of the Environment. “The goal is for it to be a quality operating terminal that is friendly from an environmental point of view and for citizens,” he said.
Regarding the depth of the dredging of the port of Montevideo, the president of the ANP said that the current 13 meters are a suitable measure for the main fluvial terminal of Uruguay.
On October 26, the ship One Amazon will arrive in the country and on the 31st, the ship of the Hapag-Lloyd shipping company. It is the first time that a vessel of these characteristics will be received, Curbelo said.
“The conditions for the construction of a hub logistics,” he said.
