More than 80% of the national road network was affected by works during this period

In his speech at ADM, the Minister of Transport, José Luis Falero, reviewed the main actions of the portfolio in the current period. He pointed out that 81.1% of the total road network at the national level was worked on and 709 kilometers of national routes were incorporated.

Falero highlighted the planning of the works from the beginning of the administration, with an emphasis on taking care of the resources of the Uruguayans. He considered that, for a country to achieve growth, there must be a clear direction and pointed out “in this Government there has been one from the first day and there will be one until the last.” The minister explained that they tried to generate a change to invest public funds efficiently and with quality, “so as not to leave future administrations with problems but with solutions.”

He explained that the National Directorate of Topography expropriated a “record” number of 2,121 plots; 1,026 linked to the railway works and 1,095 to the roads and wetlands of Rocha, which totaled an investment of 95,000,000 dollars. The National Directorate of Architecture, meanwhile, developed 1,109 works in the period, of which 718 were public and 391 were carried out through social agreements, for which 2,932 million pesos were allocated.

In terms of mobility, he praised the transition towards electric mobility promoted by Law 20,212 and the trust fund that takes into account the needs of passenger transport. While in December 2023 there were 45 electric buses in Montevideo and the metropolitan area, by the end of 2024 there will be 124 more, he compared.

He also highlighted the 70% progress of the works and dredging in the Punta Carretas marina project and announced that the Capurro fishing port will be inaugurated on September 3. He also praised the growth in port movements and the expansion of the container terminal in the port of Montevideo, which required an investment of 600 million dollars, which will generate “a before and after, with modernization, adaptation, order and security.” He also highlighted the dredging to 14 meters in the capital port, which will allow the entry of ships with greater draft.

The period will end with the addition of 709 more kilometers of national routes and 54 million dollars allocated to road works under the jurisdiction of departmental and municipal governments. In addition, 81.1% of the road network at the national level was worked on, which includes the inauguration of works on Route 6 on August 24. The plan also includes works on 230 bridges, 117 new ones, with an investment of 521 million dollars, and the construction of 12 interchanges to improve road safety. 28 truck stops were also enabled on routes and about 14 more are projected for 2024.
