A survey by B3, the São Paulo stock exchange, shows that the number of individuals investing in variable income grew 35% in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, rising from 3.3 million in 2021 to 4 .6 million this year. Compared to the second quarter, there was an increase of 200,000 investors.
Variable income are assets whose financial return cannot be measured at the time of application. It can vary positively or negatively, depending on market expectations.
The study shows that there was an increase in negotiations and in the value of all types of investment on the stock exchange. The number of investors in fixed income products rose from 9.6 million to 12.6 million, reflecting the increase in the Selic rate. Treasury Direct, in turn, is an investment option for around 2.1 million individuals, up 25% in the third quarter compared to the same period in 2021.
In a note, Felipe Paiva, director of Customer Relations and Individuals at B3, said that the numbers show that Brazilians have sought to diversify investments beyond savings. According to him, this demonstrates the potential of this segment and explains “the positive balance and recurring growth in the number of individuals in recent years”.
B3 carried out a complementary study to assess the behavior of individual investors in October, the month of the elections. The survey showed that there was growth in the number of individuals, including an increase in the volume traded and participation in the custody of assets. “The average volume traded per day on the variable income spot market increased by 18%, from R$ 7.8 billion to R$ 9.2 billion”, points out the study.
The data also show that, among the 106 thousand people who started investing in variable income in the month of September, 31% made the first operation with a value of up to R$ 40. Another 29% made investments with amounts between R$ 40 and R$ 40 $ 200. “This reinforces that more Brazilians have discovered that it is possible to start investing in variable income with smaller entry tickets and have sought to try new options”, said B3.
Individuals account for 16% of all volume traded on the spot market on the São Paulo stock exchange.
