Inumet’s rain forecasts for the Santa Lucía and the Río de la Plata

Inumet's rain forecasts for the Santa Lucía and the Río de la Plata

He Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) It predicts that it could rain twice in the Santa Lucía and De la Plata river basins until May 29, two phenomena that the authorities await with the expectation that it can alleviate the drinking water supply crisis faced by OSE due to of the drought.

But, how much does Inumet foresee that it will rain in those two “events” that it forecasts until the end of May and when will they be? The agency focused its predictions on the Santa Lucía and Río de la Plata basins.

Inumet first forecasts rain that could occur between Friday May 20 and Saturday May 21 over Santa Lucia. However, the cumulative of these precipitations would not exceed 10 millimeters and the probability of their occurrence is between 60% and 80%, although these figures are within what is considered a “medium or high” probability.

In that area of the country, according to the agency, rains could be recorded between Wednesday May 24 and Thursday May 25, and another between Sunday May 28 and Monday May 29. In both cases, the estimated amount of water that will fall ranges between 20 and 50 millimeters.

For the Río de la Plata, the Inumet rain prediction is the same as that of Santa Lucía: two events until May 29 (the first between 24-25 and the second between 28-29) with cumulatives that will go between 20 and the 50 millimeters of water.

These figures are below the normal monthly values of freshwater reserves, approximately between 90 and 100 millimeters per month.

A few days ago, the director of Inumet, Néstor Santayana, referred to the organization’s forecast of rains. “It would be a minimal contribution to increase the amount of water in Paso Severino,” said Santayana, adding that the wet period scheduled for the end of May It will help mainly in improving pastures, crops and surface soil moisture.

But for the water to drain and provide water to the dams more water needs to fall than expected by the end of Mayexplained the head of the Inumet.

Ortos rain forecasts in May

Researchers from the Faculty of Sciences, Marcelo Barreiro and Madeleine Renom, also prepared a report on the drought that has been going on since 2020 and the rain forecasts for the coming days.

In their investigation, they indicated that between May 19 and 25 there will be “rainfall throughout the country, with more accumulated in the southwest and less in the northeast.” “Average cumulative amounts of between 50-70 millimeters are expected in the southwest and between 20-30 millimeters for the northeast.”

For the week between May 26 and June 1, the researchers Barreiro and Renom state that “precipitation with average accumulated between 10-20 millimeters” is expected for the “southwest.” “The forecast for the second week generally presents greater uncertainty compared to the first,” they warn.

The portal Accuweather forecast four days of rain until next Monday, May 29. According to the meteorological portal in Montevideo and the metropolitan area it will rain on Sunday May 21, Wednesday 24, Sunday 28 and Monday 29 of this month.
