Although it rained again, temperatures dropped and heat waves are no longer forecast, the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) warned that “it is a false sensation” that the drought has finished. “It is a very critical situation.”said the agency’s head of forecasts, Nestor Santayana, to Telemundo.
Santayana commented that during April The water deficit continued despite some rainfall. and that the perspective for the beginnings of May is also in deficit. “Our projections for the fall is that it will continue in deficit. Until the first ten days of May there is no situation that can be reversed“, he claimed.
The situation is “more extreme in the south and southwest of the country,” said Santayana, who once again called for the start of a campaign for the responsible use of water in the face of this ongoing drought.
“Uruguay remains under drought conditions, and that the extreme southwest and south of the country is under conditions of sextreme drought with a value of less than 15% of available soil water; and very low values in the reservoirs of the southern basins, according to data from the National Water Directorate (DINAGUA) of the Ministry of the Environment,” the agency said in a statement.
