The Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) issued a warning this Sunday for “intense rains and very strong winds” between Monday May 16 and Wednesday May 18. The agency assures that from Monday a “deterioration in weather conditions” is expected associated with an atmospheric depression that will have its worst conditions on Tuesday and will begin to recover from Wednesday.
“The rainfall (on Monday) will mainly affect the south of the Negro River, being more intense in the southern and eastern coastal strip of the country. This situation will be accompanied by strong winds (gusts between 60/90 km/h) on the south and east coast, with a SW and S component, which will increase during the course of the day,” says the Inumet notice.
For Tuesday morning, it forecasts a “cyclone with unusual characteristics for the region” that will move from the interior of the Atlantic Ocean to the east of the country.
Rainfall will continue on Tuesday and will affect, above all, the eastern, southern and northeastern departments.
Gusts between 80-100 km/h are expected for the Central, South and Northeast areas, while for the East they could range between 100-130 km/h (mainly on the coast) with waves between 4 and 6 meters being higher. in the interior of the ocean, near the department of Rocha”, says the notice.
During that day there will be low temperatures with “very low” thermal sensations due to the effect of the wind and accumulated rain of up to 100 millimeters in the east of the country.
Possible impacts
This situation has the potential to cause coastal flooding, tree falls, power line columns to fall, roofs blown up, strong waves and the advance of the ocean on coastal towns, as well as affecting boats.
“Inumet suggests being informed of the updates of the official notices and alerts issued for the general population, and for maritime and aeronautical navigation.”
