The Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) issued a yellow alert on the morning of this Friday for “strong storms and heavy rain“. This phenomenon occurs mainly on the coast west and center of the national territory.
An atmospheric disturbance associated with a humid and unstable air mass affects the country, which generates storms “some punctually strong”, reads the official statement of the agency.
In this sense, the institute highlights that, in stormy areas, “intense rains may be recorded in short periods, occasional hail fall, intense electrical activity and strong gusts of wind“.
Inumet’s Director of Meteorology and Climate, Nestor Santayana, had warned last Wednesday that storms would be registered starting this Friday in the west and southwest, which would be the “prelude” to what was forecast for Saturday the 24th from December.
The affected localities are the following:

Flowers: Andresito, Ismael Cortinas, Juan José Castro and Trinidad.
