Intervention of the Nicaraguan foreign minister at the UN "was poor" and did not respond to the political crisis, analysts say

The Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada, gave his speech on Monday in the 77th United Nations General Assembly reiterating President Daniel Ortega’s call for respect for the “sovereignty and independence” of the peoples and asking for the sanctions imposed against his government to be lifted, which he called “coercive measures.”

The speech, according to analysts consulted by the voice of america“was repetitive, poor and sad”, by not offering a way out of the socio-political crisis that Nicaragua has been experiencing for more than four years.

Moncada did not refer to the more than 200 political prisoners that exists in the Central American country, nor to the persecution unleashed against the Catholic Church. Nor of the growing emigration of Nicaraguans seeking to improve their living conditions.

“The foreign minister of the dictatorship did not bring anything new to the table. He ignored messages sent by the Vatican, nations and human rights organizations that have called for the release of political prisoners. For the dictatorship, political prisoners do not exist by not mentioning them at all, ”he indicated to the VOA the former Nicaraguan ambassador to the OAS, Arturo McFields.

Foreign Minister Moncada also reiterated Ortega’s support for his allies, such as Venezuela and Cuba, and supported Russia, whom he said was fighting “against fascism and for peace,” despite the fact that the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine has been questioned by the international community.

Moncada also extended words for China, Ortega’s new political ally since the end of 2021, and whom, according to analysts, he sees as a possible socio-commercial substitute after the United States sanctions on Managua.

“Our embrace of solidarity to the admirable resistance, and fair development of the People’s Republic of China, which generates so much discomfort, concern and envy, to the enemies of the common good,” said the Nicaraguan foreign minister.

Foreign Minister joins Bukele, Castro and Giammattei

Finally, the diplomat concluded the speech by appealing to the independence and sovereignty of Nicaragua, as did the presidents of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, Alejandro Giammattei, Nayib Bukele and Xiomara Castro, respectively.

Something that, according to Salvadoran analyst Napoleón Campos, an expert on international issues, “is a common point in the scripts of all tyrannies and authoritarian regimes in the world.”

“The use of this argument by the governments of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua and Nayib Bukele in El Salvador, tells us that the time has come for both of these arguments in the face of growing accusations… for the democratic, constitutional and institutional dismantling; and the serious human rights violations that both perpetrate,” Campos said.

The expert emphasized that Ortega ignores article 46 of the Constitution in which the State of Nicaragua assumes the obligation to protect “the rights set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Meanwhile, Bukele -continues the analyst- does not honor the commitment of Article 144 of the Constitution, which establishes that international treaties and agreements signed by El Salvador “constitute laws of the Republic”, and that “in the event of a conflict between the treaty and the law, the treaty shall prevail.”
