The Dominican political scenario has mutated towards a frontal exchange between President Luis Abinader and former president Leonel Fernández, leaving open a possible “pitched electoral battle” out of time, in a complicated political situation with an eye on the upcoming elections.
In the meantime, the president of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Danilo Medina, has not been left behind and has chosen to intensify his attacks against the performance of the Perremeist Government.
The verbal skirmish between Abinader, of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM)and Fernández, from the People’s Force (FP), former allies in 2020, has generated motivation in the bases of these organizations, which have reacted in this regard.
The first, during the anniversary of the PRM, “turned its guns” against the opposition, accusing it of having two enemies that make it impossible for it to grow to reach power: the events of the past and their repercussions; facts that, he assures, are on the internet.
When leading the 11th anniversary of the ruling party in the Great Arena of Santiago, the president said, referring to the PLD governments: “They continue clinging to a past that the country does not want to repeat and they promise a future that they never know how to explain.”
Although constitutionally he cannot run for the presidency again, Abinader has adopted a speech defending his party and disqualifying his political adversaries.
He took advantage of the occasion to harangue the troops of the PRM, a political entity that, according to him, is not a current situation, but of great importance, because it is founded on principles, guided by ideals and supported by a committed militancy.
As every action brings a response, former President Fernández immediately responded to Abinader, pointing out that Dominicans know that the reality of their pockets is not resolved either with arrogance or with Google searches, but with policies.
“The reality is evident: in the face of a growing opposition, power reacts with astonishing arrogance,” Fernández wrote in his X account.
