Havana Cuba. — Inhabitants of the province of Mayabeque, one of the territories affected by the passage of Hurricane Ian, report damage to mobile data, SMS and voice services as a result of the total absence of electrical fluid in Cuba.
According to testimonies collected by CubaNetthe 3G and 4G connections that provide Internet access to telephones work intermittently and in some localities of the province the problem is general.
“Now we are complete: without electricity, without water and now without communications,” a man from Mayabeque who identified himself as Juan José told this newspaper.
Yesterday night, the company Unión Eléctrica (UNE) reported through official media about an impact on the electrical system at the national level that left the country without power. However, the province of Mayabeque was already affected since the early hours of the morning.
The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) stated in social networks that numerous base stations and facilities linked to the telecommunications network were without electricity.
“Until now, a significant number of base stations and cabinets have been identified with a lack of electricity, which impacts the operation of mobile and fixed services,” said the statement from the state monopoly.
“There is no telephone signal, there is no current, there is no food, there is no freedom. Communist ineptitude at its best,” said a user on ETECSA’s Facebook profile.
A worker from that entity on condition of anonymity told CubaNet that in the absence of electricity, it is normal for the service to be interrupted in many places.
“Not all towns have power plants or the resources to keep them running, which causes partial or total cuts in mobile phone service and the antennas of Wi-Fi zones also fall.”
Preliminary figures released by ETECSA itself indicate that at least 380 radio bases located in the places where Hurricane Ian hit the hardest were affected.
