Internet Day: What are the digital platforms most used by Peruvians?

The pandemic increased internet consumption in Peru and promoted new ways of relating. According to Ipsos, in the country there are more than 14 million users of , which represents 82% of the population of urban Peru. For Albert Díaz, head of the Information Technology careers at the Certus institute, the pandemic has significantly accelerated internet consumption and, in addition, has changed the digital consumption habits of Peruvians.

”Currently, Peru is the country with the highest growth in digital audience in Latin America. Faced with this, digital platforms have increased their penetration, time of use and number of users. Such growth responds directly to the increase in the use of mobile phones, since 8 out of 10 Peruvians access them from cell phones or other devices.assures the Certus specialist.

In line with this, Díaz points out that Peruvians carry out more and more activities online, such as the use of social networks, shopping, streaming, studying and working, online games, among others. For this reason, and regarding the international internet day which is celebrated this May 17, the technology expert, details which are the digital platforms most used by Peruvians:

  1. Facebook: This social network has become the most consumed digital platform by Peruvians. At the moment there are about 29 million Facebook accounts and it is the network most used by the male population. “At the beginning of 2022, 5 out of 10 people connected to the most popular network in Meta were men. Facebook is the social network most used by Peruvians to consume news”Diaz mentions.
  2. WhatsApp: This is the second most used platform by Peruvians, since 85% of them have an account in this application. This, without a doubt, shows that users prefer to chat, make voice calls and video calls. Likewise, during the pandemic it was a useful platform for entrepreneurs, as it helped them stay connected with their buyers with immediate and personalized customer service.
  3. Youtube: Followed by Facebook and WhatsApp, this is the most used network in Peru. This year, Peruvian users of this platform represented 79.9% of all Internet surfers in our country. This network is one of the favorites for Internet users to enjoy videos and helps to capture more people’s attention, who stay for hours on the platform.
  4. TikTok: The app that grew the most since the start of the pandemic was TikTok. In Peru, users of this platform reached 51.2% at the beginning of this year. In addition, it is the third most downloaded application in the country and is very popular among Peruvians between the ages of 12 and 17. Likewise, brands consider it an innovative means to reach their audience in a direct and creative way, either through “Tiktokers” or through their own account.
  5. Instagram: In 2022, a total of 40.7% of Instagram users were registered in our country. For news consumption, this platform is the most used after YouTube. In addition, the trend of publishing content on this network is increasing by Peruvian users, especially by “influencers”, since 37% of them consider Instagram as one of their favorite platforms.

The multipurpose of digital platforms

Finally, the Certus specialist maintains that, after the pandemic, digital platforms now have a multipurpose. “Today, platforms are not only useful for entertainment or to inform us, since they are also attributed the characteristic of creating virtual spaces to improve interaction on issues of education, work, health, business, finance, etc. Before this was not so natural, now it is part of everyday life”he concluded.
