International rejection of violence against peace signatories in Colombia

Bogotá, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Organizations (UN) and guarantor countries of the Peace Agreement in Colombia today rejected the assassination of former guerrilla and social leader Jorge Santofimio, as well as others in the process of reincorporation.

In this regard, the UN condemned the incident and reiterated its concern for the safety of those who are committed to peace in this South American nation.

“We shared last week about the difficult security situation for ex-combatants and the community. His loss is a tragic reminder of the urgency of reinforcing the protection of those who are committed to peace,” said Carlos Ruiz, special representative in Colombia of the UN Secretary General.

For his part, Eugenio Martínez, general director of Latin America and the Caribbean of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba (a country that, together with Norway, is a guarantor of the peace process in Colombia), reiterated his concern about the breach of the security guarantees provided for in the Final Peace Agreement.

Likewise, he expressed the need to reinforce protection to avoid reprehensible crimes such as that of Jorge Santofimio, the assassinated 305 of the signatories of the Agreement.

This is the sixth homicide of a former guerrilla who accepted the Final Agreement, since on January 27 the Constitutional Court ordered the Government of Colombia to guarantee the security and personal integrity of the former FARC-EP guerrillas, said the diplomat.

The Norwegian embassy in Colombia, likewise, condemned this crime against the leader of the Common Multiactive Community Cooperative in the department of Putumayo and pointed out that three minors were injured in the same attack.

“It is urgent that the national government guarantee the protection of the peace signatories. Our solidarity with the victims and their families,” said the embassy of the country that was the guarantor of the peace process reached in Havana, between the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army and the government in 2016.

According to data from the Observatory of Human Rights and Conflicts of the Institute of Studies for Development and Peace, with Jorge Santofimio there are six ex-guerrillas killed so far in 2022, and 305 since the signing of the Agreement to date.
