MIAMI, United States. — Every October 15th, the world celebrates the International Day of Rural Womena date that promotes the advancement of those women who live in agricultural and less developed areas.
The first International Day of Rural Women was celebrated on October 15, 2008. It was established by the General Assembly in its resolution 62/136, dated December 18, 2007. The regulations recognize “the decisive role and contribution of women including indigenous women, in promoting agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty”.
In Cuba, state propaganda, almost always backed by declarations by FAO representatives on the island, usually takes advantage of the date to extol the achievements of Cuban peasant women.
The official media also highlight the work of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), “main defender of women’s rights in the country and promoter of public policies in favor of more equitable gender relations.”
However, the panorama inside the island is bleak, as shown by countless reports that have appeared in independent media on the island. In the Cuban countryside, the situation of women becomes more difficult and not a few must dedicate themselves almost exclusively caring for their children, almost always without the basic conditions for them.
Testimonies collected by this same medium show the lack of incentives and opportunities for cultural and labor improvement of women who live in the interior of the country, where the economic situation is even more pressing than in the main cities.
Also in the interior of the island and in more depopulated areas, abuses against women are more frequent, as well as femicides.
