“International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”

"International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women"

Yesterday the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women” was commemorated. Its purpose is to make visible violence against women and girls worldwide. The Municipality of Montevideo adhered to this date and different stands could be found on its esplanade. “Punto Violeta” provided information about the services offered by the IMM to respond to cases of gender and sexual violence. In addition, advice is offered on how to act in the event of experiencing or accompanying a situation of this type.

At this daily point, the R spoke with the former mayor Micaela Tellechea, who was present on the esplanade and said “there is a 099019500 which is a new WhatsApp, you have to send a message saying “You are not alone” to this cell phone number and it will all the various services that exist for women, disability status, sexual harassment in public spaces appear.” and she added that “they have already had inquiries in this number as it spreads more, the tool is used more.”

We also found the “Human Management” post that coincides with the Gender Unit of the Human Management Department where it presented brochures on harassment and a proposal for temporary tattoos to the public that said “#NoEstasSola” The “Casa de las Ciudadanas Post” It was a space for participation and training for women and dissidences that was present with brochures and pre-registration of activities.

On the left of the esplanade was the post of “Polyclinics of the Intendancy”. The Health Division of the commune provided information on its comprehensive care services for women and children and adolescents in situations of mistreatment and abuse.

There was also the screen printers stall, where “Mercada Feminista” and “Prendidxs Fuego” printed handkerchiefs with a slogan and special design.

Finally, at the “Scarves made by women deprived of liberty” stand, we met Alejandra Saravia.

She stated that the Administration, through the Advisory Division for Gender Equality, integrates the Working Group on Women Deprived of Liberty together with academia, government institutions and civil society organizations. “From there, different different lines of work arise, in addition to a work agreement with the Department of Gender and Diversity of the National Institute of Rehabilitation, different actions are carried out with women deprived of liberty.”

“We do workshops together with the women deprived of their liberty from the National Rehabilitation Center on issues related to gender, empowerment and a life free of violence, among others” he added and added “we work with the sewing workshop that the women have accompanied by operators in the CNR, emerging the initiative to be able to make these handkerchiefs that we are presenting here and distributing on the esplanade for this Friday. They are phrases that the women thought of and what they wanted to convey in them so that they can be used by all the citizens of Montevideo.”

This activity aims to promote the implementation of regulations for the eradication of violence, and provide support to raise awareness on the subject.

In our country, approximately 1.1 million Uruguayans experienced situations of gender-based violence (GBV) at some point in their lives, the United Nations reported from its website. This indicates, therefore, that the sphere of violence by a partner or ex-partner is more frequently found. With regard to InMujeres, from January to September, a total of 22,590 consultations were attended as referrals, therefore the most frequent sphere of violence perpetrated by a partner or ex-partner. The Inmujeres response system attended 22,590 consultations and of those same 2,385 women entered the care services.
