The leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received this Monday a strong international support, while the silence of the president of Brazil persisted, Jair Bolsonaro, who still does not recognize his defeat in Sunday’s ballot.
The leader of the Workers’ Party (PT), 77, prevailed over the far-right by a narrow margin, 50.9% of the vote against 49.1%.
One day after the official result, Bolsonaro, 67, has not commented on Lula’s victorywhich was immediately recognized by the leaders of the United States, Germany, France and Russia.
This Monday, Joe Biden phoned Lula to highlight the “solid relationship” between the United States and Brazil and both promised to work as “partners” in the fight against the climate crisis and regional migration, among other “common challenges,” the White House said in a statement.
Lula also held a meeting in Sao Paulo with the Argentine president, Alberto Fernándezduring which he promised to visit that country before taking office on January 1.
Bolsonaro, meanwhile, continues without giving statements. He arrived early at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia, where according to Brazilian media he evaluated a possible pronouncement with his team and then left for the Alvorada residence.
During his victory speech, Lula expressed his concern about the transfer of power: “I need to know if the president we defeated It will allow a transition so that we have information about things”.
Only some of his parliamentary allies admitted defeat online where Bolsonarism is usually very active.
