The Ministry of the Interior decided to remove the director of the National Police, Diego Fernández, and the executive director, Jorge Berriel, according to what Telenoche reported and confirmed to The Observer political sources. The changes will become effective on March 1.
The deputy director of the National Police, Héctor Ferreira, resigned from his position in December.
Both Berriel and Ferreira are being investigated for the case involving the former head of presidential security, Alejandro Astesiano.
This Wednesday at noon the Ministry of the Interior will hold a press conference.
According to El Observador, the police chief of Salto, José Manuel Azambuya, will enter instead of Diego Fernández, while the police chief of Colonia, Jhonny Diego, will be appointed instead of Jorge Berriel.
Berriel is being investigated as a result of the fact that in the chats with Alejandro Astesiano a conversation appears in which he provides him with data on the case of the minor who denounced a rape at a National Party party.
Astesiano wrote to him on April 3 who was with “the prez”, Luis Lacalle Pouand I ask: “Do you know anything about a party that was held for white youth and there is a complaint of abuse by a female?”
Berriel first handed him the police report that was dated the previous day, which refers to the complaint of alleged sexual abuse and describes the basic information that was disseminated at that time by the police: what happened at Chacra San Francisco and that the young woman he entered the Cerro Coordination Center convulsing. There appears the name of the mother of the minor, who was the complainant.
The next day Berriel gave him an enlarged part, where they appear the details reported as well as the names of both the victim and the accused.
In turn, Astesiano arranged with Ferreira and Berriel that a cash be transferred to Rivera after he protected his son during a criminal investigation and even helped him make up a statement.
In an exchange with that policeman, Astesiano found out that the motorcycle that was stolen from his son was stolen. The policeman advised him what to declare, told him that he was delaying the tax summons and that talk was interspersed with the request for cash to carry out his transfer to Rivera. “I’m finishing making the statement, I’ll give it to read and memorize it,” he tells her.
Another of the situations for which Berriel is being investigated is because Astesiano asked him for information about a trip by Lorena Ponce de León. “Ok, I’ll find out something for you,” Berriel replied.
