The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (Court-IDH) required the Peruvian State to suspend the release of the convicted former president Alberto Fujimori ordered by the Constitutional Court (TC).
Peru21 agreed to the communication sent by the Inter-American Court to those involved in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases -the relatives of the victims and the Peruvian State- in which it is indicated that this decision was adopted today in a plenary session.
“Require the State of Peru, in order to guarantee the right of access to justice for the victims of the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases, to refrain from executing the order of the Constitutional Court of Peru ordering the release of Alberto Fujimori Fujimori, until so long as this international court can decide on the request for provisional measures in the 147th ordinary period of sessions”, indicates the pronouncement.
SIGHT: Controversy opens due to ruling of the TC that orders the release of Alberto Fujimori
The provisional measures mentioned were requested by the relatives of the citizens murdered during the Fujimori government. The request was raised after the TC approved restoring the pardon granted to Fujimori in 2017.
The full resolution, to which this newspaper had access, was notified tonight. In it, a virtual hearing is also called for this Friday, April 1, in order to evaluate the provisional measures to be taken in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases requested by the relatives, after the TC issued its ruling.
Last Monday, the TC ordered the immediate release of the former head of state, sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009 for extrajudicial crimes in Barrios Altos and La Cantuta.
The sentence was supported by three magistrates (Ernesto Blume, José Luis Sardón and Augusto Ferrero), including the casting vote of the president of the TC Augusto Ferrero. Fujimori, meanwhile, is still being held in the Diroes prison.
